Bonds are loans that investors make to governments or companies. In return, the borrower promises to pay regular interest and to repay the original amount on a fixed date. When market interest rates rise, the prices of existing bonds usually fall, because new bonds offer higher interest. Bonds issued by borrowers with weaker finances generally pay higher interest to compensate investors for the greater risk of not being repaid.
